Fall 2006 | WHY ORAL HISTORIES?

In August, Coordinating Committee for History in Arizona (CCHA) held the third annual Arizona Centennial Workshop at Arizona State University (ASU). This year's theme was "Voices of Arizona: Commemorate the Past -- Leave a Legacy." That message fits in perfectly with Agave Productions' plans for Copperstate Centennial.

Agave Productions has been recording a wide variety of oral histories for more than six years and we are working with the Arizona Historical Society to make the thousands of historic interviews filmed by KOOL-TV available in digital format. These voices of Arizona will be the basis for the Copperstate Centennial series of documentaries, along with new interviews that will be recorded over the next six years leading up to Arizona Centennial. All of these stories will be archived with the Arizona Historical Society to leave a legacy for the future.

We plan to tell the stories of Arizona by topics, starting with the people and politics on the "Road to Statehood" and continuing with the traditional 5 Cs of Arizona . . . Cattle, Cotton, Citrus, Copper and Climate. Then we'll feature diverse subjects such as Water, Railroads, Aviation, Movie Making, Broadcasting, Highways, Law & Order, Astronomy, Medicine, Architecture, Mining, Native Americans, Politics, Ranching, Tourism, Women in Arizona, World War II, and many more.

If you know people who can help us tell these stories, or have photos or other ideas, let us know. We hope to include a wide variety of people, from all parts of Arizona, in these programs.
